Smoother/Softer/Tones of Berries

The Wayanad Region located on top of majestic western ghats with altitudes varying from 700 metres to 2100 metres is one of the five GI tagged locations for the Indian Coffee and one of the 18 agrobiodiversity hot spots of the Globe. Temp varies from 18 to 28 degrees with average rainfall of 2500 mm. The region is covered with lush green forests, Hilly terrain (Chembra Peak), Lakes (Pookot), Waterfalls and Dams (Banasura Sagar Dam) and is situated closer to the Kabini river, Tributary of Cauvery known as Ganges of south India. As an approach towards natural farming, the farmers generally grow coffee plantations under the shade of spice plantations mainly pepper so that the cash crop can be protected against pests and other diseases generated in the soil. However Arabica coffee which accounts for less than 3% of the total coffee produce in Kerala is also grown in hilly terrains mainly confined to the high altitude regions comprising the districts such as Kozhikode, Palakkad, Idukki and Kannur. Three different areas across Wayanad for coffee growing include Sulthan Bathery, Nenmeni and Noolpuzha. Use of pesticides and fertilizers is minimal.
