Wayanad Robusta is rich in caffeine and chlorogenic acids which give it woody, bitter and leathery taste.

The Wayanad Region located on top of majestic western ghats with altitudes varying from 700 metres to 2100 metres is one of the five GI tagged locations for the Indian Coffee and one of the 18 agrobiodiversity hot spots of the Globe. Temp varies from 18 to 28 degrees with average rainfall of 2500 mm. The region is covered with lush green forests, Hilly terrain (Chembra Peak), Lakes (Pookot), Waterfalls and Dams (Banasura Sagar Dam) and is situated closer to the Kabini river, Tributary of Cauvery known as Ganges of south India. Robusta accounts for 95% of the total coffee grown in the region and Wayanad contributes to 23% of India’s total coffee production. Coffee is cultivated on 110,000 hectares. The population of Wayanad is 800,000 and 80% of people are engaged in coffee cultivation. The majority of the coffee growers in Wayanad are small and marginal farmers which account to more than 90 % with more than 60 % of the land holders occupying less than one hectare of land. The average landholding size of a farmer in the district has been found to be approximately 0.68 hectares. A large chunk of the Wayanad population consists of tribal communities with almost 17 % of the state’s tribes residing in Kerala. The tribal communities play a significant role in coffee cultivation. Regional Research Coffee station is located in Wayanad which trains growers on methods of coffee cultivation.
